I can HARDLY BELIEVE that it's almost June. JUNE. Bring on the summer colours everybody, lavender, peach, coral and pool blue! Neons and brights! Bring. It. On.
We all know that brands like Kat Von D, Ciate, Tarte and Too Faced have cornered the high-end market of quality liquid lipsticks, but with every drug store brand competing for the rest of your dollars, nobody has really come close to NYX yet, and I imagine it will be awhile until somebody can. With dupes that can almost completely replicate KVD and Tarte's offerings, Nyx SEEMINGLY has it made in the shade. Or does it?
Nyx's Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick in Amethyst
I. LOVE. PURPLE. One of my favourite OCC Lip Tars is Hoochie, a colour THEY describe as an extreme magenta which looks more like a violet to me. I also love my Mac Instigator which is a deep, blackened plum. But I wanted something more vibrant and playful, but still extremely striking and affordable as I knew this would be a special occasion colour and not a weekly wear. In comes NYX!
The Liquid Suede line is a godsend, but also really controversial. The pigmentation and quality of the applicator are top notch, but the longevity of some of these Liquid Suedes is definitely where the difference between the high and low-end of the beauty spectrum becomes apparent.
Overall, Amethyst is an absolute stunner of a colour. It looks amazing, turns heads and I receive COUNTLESS compliments when I wear it. But it's not a lipstick for long-wear. It's great for when you're going out for a few hours and want to really pop, but it doesn't deal well with any outside oils from drinking or eating AT ALL. It ends up gumming up and getting tacky around the corners of my mouth, and even when I try to super exfoliate my lips and put a primer base on, it takes forever to dry. And when you try to apply another coat, it flakes, flakes, flakes and is really frustrating to remove.
THAT SAID, the reason I still recommend these colours is that they are perfect if you want to grab a trendy colour you know you won't wear TOO often but still want in your arsenal, like Amethyst, Vintage or Stone Fox. These colours are also a great stepping stone to know if you want to invest in matte liquid lipsticks in the future. ALSO, Nyx has very similar shades to all their Liquid Suedes in their Creme lipstick line so if you just really want the shade in a different style of product, they have you covered.
You can get NYX Cosmetics from Rexall, Shoppers Drug Mart, at stand-alone NYX Stores and online. They retail for about $10-12 but are often on sale at some of the drug stores so if you're lucky you can sometimes nab a few for $8!
