I was surfing through some old posts by The Happy Sloths and came across this interesting list of DIY VS DFY (Do-it-yourself vs done-for-you). I'm pretty much a DIY girl, mostly due to frugality, but I thought it might be cute to run all this down now and record it, and see where I fall this time next year. Here's my list as of June 2014.
Do it yourself VS Done for you
- Eyebrows: DIY 90% of the time. But I occasionally get them reshaped when I've been very bad with my maintenance at a local salon for $5. Mine grow in really thick but it's the fine ones around the edges that creep up on me that really get me.
- Hair: DFY! I've never actually tried cutting my hair before, but I HAVE let a friend cut my hair for free (she wasn't a hair stylist) out of desperation before. I've experimented with going to get free cuts from salon trainees and have 'graduated' to getting my hair cut by the Academy or Graduating students (the ones close to graduating)from Aveda Salon. Not bad for $40/45.
Bangs When I had a shorter, shaggier hair style I would cut my own bangs almost all the time. But they were supposed to be mussed up and it looked fine, all things considered. Now that I have a heavy, straight fringe I can't be as cavalier. This is definitely a DFY. But luckily Aveda allows me to get this done by a student for free!
Manicure: DIY! I've had quite a few manicures in my life, but my own polishes are often better and I can USUALLY do a better job. I might go back to get a shellac manicure if needed but I think regular polish will ALWAYS be DIY for me from now on.
Pedicure: DFY I occasionally do my own pedicures, but there are many months in Canada to even show off your toes so I usually get a nice late-spring pedi to kick off sandal season with style.
Body hair removal: DIY. Completely DIY. I cannot fathom having somebody else strip me of hair! Ewwww.
Makeup for special occasion: DIY! I know what I like, I know how I like to look, I don't need to spend the extra money to look good :)
Skin: DIY. I can make amaazing masks at home with food, why would I need to spend a lot of money for chemicals at the spa? (That said, I do enjoy sheet masks...)
Depending on how much spare time I have in the future, I can see some of these changing, but not in the near future. Am I really missing anything by doing it by myself? What do you splurge on?
