It's officially 2015, do you know how much you spent on makeup and beauty products last year?
Unfortunately thanks to the magic of Mint and tracking my spending (something I blog about on my personal finance blog Househippo), I do. And while it wasn't a ridiculous amount, as I stare at my overflowing drawers of nail polish and makeup I can't help but wonder if that money would be better spent elsewhere.
So what am I going to do about it? A January no-buy, of course!
I pledge that in the month of January I will buy NO MAKEUP PRODUCTS WHATSOEVER. And to up the ante, I will also not purchase any unneccessary clothes or books (exceptions include a new pair of winter boots if I can find ones on sale within my budget.)
The reason I really want to do this to cut down on the subconscious spending that I do every time I walk into a Shoppers Drug Mart to buy toilet paper, or Target for detergent. It seems that I'm always on autopilot these days can't help but wander into an aisle and nab a $5 item to 'test out' that will probably get tried once and put in a drawer for months.
I do have to pat myself on the back before I begin though, because I want to point out that I spent $0 in December on makeup (other than my Birchbox subscription), so I know that I can do it again easily. (It doesn't hurt that I was sick for two weeks in December and was going to work and straight home, and then was away for a week, but I digress...)
To add some oopmh to this no-buy, I'm also embarking on a year-long No Buy for the products listed here on my No Buy Page for the year. I'll be updating that page with links to my monthly challenges, goals and results.
To summarize, in 2015 I will not be purchasing mascara, body wash, hand lotion, blush, bronzer, shampoo, conditioner, lip gloss/balms and perfume.
Don't think I can do it? Follow me as I try!
